How to Make Your Own Harry Potter Costume

Every little kid loves Harry Potter and that's why they love to dress up as him. As a parent, you know that you'd have to give in to it at some point when your child begs you to make him a Harry Potter costume. So where do you start then if you know that it's inevitable (or if your kid has actually been nagging you for weeks now)? Well you could just make him a costume, you know. It's actually easy. So read on if you want to know how to make your child a wizard costume.

The Robe

First of all, you're going to need a long black robe. It's actually just a long black dress that you put on over your basic clothing. Any plain black robe will do so long as you know your child's size. Cut it up or sew it down if you have to in order to make sure that it fits your child. If your kid happens to be very young, you can just make a robe out of one of your old black shirts or something.

The Shirt

A basic Harry Potter costume must also be complemented with a plain rugby shirt. Get your kid a rugby shirt with long sleeves to complete the overall Harry Potter look. Also, make sure that it's colored in plain grey and has no other designs on it such as stripes or checkers. If you don't have a plain grey rugby shirt, then just go with a normal grey t-shirt that you can sew up to look like a rugby shirt such as putting on a red stripe on the collars or the seam designs. You could also sew up an old sweatshirt just as long as it's got no hood and that it doesn't have zippers on the front or anything.

The Pants

The pants don't really need to be complicated. But if you want it to look more authentic, then get your kid some basic slacks to complement his Harry Potter costume. Go with black khaki instead of other materials. Jeans are not a good idea since they're going to be easily noticed. The trick is to make everyone look up at your kid and not down.

Shoes, Wand and Glasses

For the shoes, you'll need a basic black pair. Try not to go with rubber shoes, but if you can't find anything else, just go with plain black rubber shoes. Also, your kid will need some glasses that should easily fit him. If you can't afford some glasses for your child, then just cut up some cardboard and paint it black. With the wand, get a pencil and paint that one brown or dark yellow at least. Cut out some pieces of cardboard with different colors and glue them separately near the tip of the wand.

A Harry Potter costume is basically easy to make on your own. You might need to brush up on your sewing skills if you plan on making the costume look more authentic. As a final note, make sure that his hair looks exactly the same as Harry Potter. Also, draw a Z shaped scar on his forehead with a pencil or with some makeup in order to complete your child's Harry Potter look.
