Every little kid loves Harry Potter and that's why they love to dress up as him. As a parent, you know that you'd have to give in to it at some point when your child begs you to make him a Harry Potter costume. So where do you start then if you know that it's inevitable (or if your kid has actually been nagging you for weeks now)? Well you could just make him a costume, you know. It's actually easy. So read on if you want to know how to make your child a wizard costume.
The Robe
First of all, you're going to need a long black robe. It's actually just a long black dress that you put on over your basic clothing. Any plain black robe will do so long as you know your child's size. Cut it up or sew it down if you have to in order to make sure that it fits your child. If your kid happens to be very young, you can just make a robe out of one of your old black shirts or something.
The Shirt
A basic Harry Potter costume must also be complemented with a plain rugby shirt. Get your kid a rugby shirt with long sleeves to complete the overall Harry Potter look. Also, make sure that it's colored in plain grey and has no other designs on it such as stripes or checkers. If you don't have a plain grey rugby shirt, then just go with a normal grey t-shirt that you can sew up to look like a rugby shirt such as putting on a red stripe on the collars or the seam designs. You could also sew up an old sweatshirt just as long as it's got no hood and that it doesn't have zippers on the front or anything.
The Pants
The pants don't really need to be complicated. But if you want it to look more authentic, then get your kid some basic slacks to complement his Harry Potter costume. Go with black khaki instead of other materials. Jeans are not a good idea since they're going to be easily noticed. The trick is to make everyone look up at your kid and not down.
Shoes, Wand and Glasses
For the shoes, you'll need a basic black pair. Try not to go with rubber shoes, but if you can't find anything else, just go with plain black rubber shoes. Also, your kid will need some glasses that should easily fit him. If you can't afford some glasses for your child, then just cut up some cardboard and paint it black. With the wand, get a pencil and paint that one brown or dark yellow at least. Cut out some pieces of cardboard with different colors and glue them separately near the tip of the wand.
A Harry Potter costume is basically easy to make on your own. You might need to brush up on your sewing skills if you plan on making the costume look more authentic. As a final note, make sure that his hair looks exactly the same as Harry Potter. Also, draw a Z shaped scar on his forehead with a pencil or with some makeup in order to complete your child's Harry Potter look.

How to Make a Hermione Costume
Hermione Granger happens to be one of the most popular fictional female teen characters of today and that's why many girls love to dress up as her whenever Halloween comes up (or whenever there's some other costume themed party). So if you want to know how to make your own Hermione costume, then read on.
Hermione's Robes
Just like any member of Gryffindor House, Hermione wears a plain black robe that almost reaches the floor. Basically, the robe is sewn with red seams and has a Gryffindor House patch on its upper right side on the front. However, you can choose to just skip the patch or you could even just line the seams with tape colored in red and yellow.
Hermione's School Clothes
Hermione also wears a white button-down shirt under a grey or black vest. Look in some local thrift stores for these. Just make sure that they're plain and have no other design colors. You can also go with plain shirts as long as they look like rugby shirts and that they fit you. Also, wear a black skirt that matches her vest or shirt. Make sure that when you pick a skirt, it's exactly the same color as the shirt. A Hermione costume is also complemented with a pair of plain black shoes for girls as well as leg-high socks or stockings to go along with it. If you want Hermione's school clothes to look authentic, sew some red seams on the shirt or vest.
Hermione's Tie and Scarf
Hermione basically wears a red and gold striped tie. Her scarf is also of the same design so it's best to keep this in mind when you're looking for them in thrift stores. If you find ties and scarves colored in red only, then you can paint them or actually sew some additional golden designs on it. Try to copy Hermione's various styles from pictures on the internet.
Hermione's Hair
Hermione's hair is sandy-blonde. Style it according to your preference on a specific movie. Styling your hair according to a specific sequel of the movies is one important consideration for making an authentic Hermione costume. For example: When she was still a freshman, she had these wildly puffed wavy locks that were also sometimes crinkled. As she got older, her hair straightened out a bit and it made her look more mature.
Other Hermione Accessories
Hermione's wand is basically like that of the boys'. However, most of the time (and in pictures), her wand is basically dark yellow. You can make a wand out of a new pencil and just paint it according to which specific movie or picture you're copying. Trim it down with a knife to make it look pointier but make sure to have adult supervision when you're doing this so as to avoid any accidents. Also, Hermione always carries books (most of the time). You can choose to create some books which are made out of cardboard if you don't want to carry real ones.
The important thing to keep in mind when creating a Hermione costume is that she's a Gryffindor. That means that her overall attire is designed in colors of maroon and gold. Try to incorporate these colors into your costume so as to look more authentic.

How to Make Your Own Harry Potter Broom
A Harry Potter costume isn't complete without a broomstick. It's what makes going as Harry distinctive during Halloween parties (or just some cosplay parties). So if you want to go as Harry Potter and you want to know how to make your own Harry Potter broom, then read on.
The Easy Way
There are basically two ways to make your own flying broomstick. First would be the easy way, and the other one's the hard way. The easy way is, of course, more popular and quicker for you to do. Here are some pointers:
Get an old broom; or any other normal broom. You can buy one at stores for fewer than 5 or 6 dollars.
Get 2 long sticks equal to the length of the broomstick you just bought. If you happen to find a near-inch thick stick then you'll only need one.
Attach the stick (or sticks) to the broomstick and wrap it up with duct tape to make the broom look thicker. Wrap the ends thickly with the tape and shape it to look smooth.
Get some brown or dark yellow paint and color the duct tape with it. Allow it to dry for a whole day.
Finish up your Harry Potter broom by attaching some yellow cardboard on the stick's end below (top of the twigs). Shape it to look like horns pointing down. Also, get some red paper and attach it to the top end of the broomstick and write down Nimbus 2000 on it with gold colors.
You're done.
The Hard Way
Of course, if you really want to know how to make your own flying broomstick from scratch, then read below.
Get a piece of round wood that's cut long enough to pass for the broom's handle. Find one that's at least an inch and a half thick. If you can't find one, then find two sticks and attach them both together with glue.
Like the method above, wrap both of them in duct tape and make sure to smoothen out the ends of it. Wrap thickly if you want your Harry Potter broomstick to look nicer.
After that, paint the tape brown or dark yellow and let the stick dry for the whole day.
Gather some very thin twigs or even thinner sticks. Gather a whole lot while you let the stick's paint dry.
Attach your thin sticks or twigs to the end of the dried and painted broomstick handle with some rubber band and glue. Duct tape them too if you have to, just paint over the tape with black colors.
Attach some horns on the end side (the twigs) with makeshift cardboards pointing downwards. Attach some red paper on the top end also and write down Nimbus 2000 or something. Write it down in golden or yellow colors to make it look more noticeable. Then, you're done.
A Harry Potter broom is easy once you know the basics. You can add even more designs to the broom once you get the hang of it.
